Our Featured Pets..

are a Boxer / Beagle mix and a Cardigan Welsh Corgi mix; DAKOTA, the beautiful Boxer mix is, appropriately, Tri-color like a Beagle, the size of a smaller Boxer with a definate boxer head - and personality! and PACO, the Corgi x is Sable with white trim and big big ears! Dakota is about 18 months old and Shortround is under a year; Read more about the Program here: http://www.doc.state.nc.us/DOP/Program/leash.htm These are young, enthusiastic, energetic and exhuberant dogs; and while they are receiving excellent training there is not the opportunity to expose them to small children, cats or other small animals. We therefore suggest families with children 10 years of age or older. Check them out on Our Adoptable Pet List above. Adoptions will be handled through 'PALS for PAWS' at http://www.palsforpaws.org. Graduation will be early September for these dogs.

A NEW LEASH ON LIFE

Craven/Pamlico Animal Services and Pitt County Animal Shelter has partnered with Craven Correctional Institution to receive 4 dogs every 8 weeks. We are also partnered with Pals for Paws who is sponsoring “A New Leash On Life Program” as well as handling the adoption applications and placement for the Craven-Pamlico dogs; The New Leash On Life Program helps to reduce the homeless pet population and promotes adoption of unwanted animals, and provides education about responsible pet ownership. The inmates spend 8 weeks teaching the dogs basic obedience, house training and socialization skills, which make them better pets for adoption. It is a community service program that provides an opportunity for prison facilities to partner with local government and nonprofit agencies to give inmates an opportunity to perform community service work while incarcerated. The partnership provides an opportunity for dogs to be trained for companionship. For more information on the New Leash on Life Program, visit: http://www.doc.state.nc.us/DOP/Program/leash.htm To date they have graduated 70+ wonderful dogs! Thank you to Drake Parker of TOP DOG Training Academy in Washington/Greenville NC for his dedication to not only the dogs, but to the development of the program and the young men that are the 'hands-on' trainers. This is truly a WIN/WIN situation for us all.

Who We Are

We are a division of Craven County Environmental Health Department, and serve as Rabies Control for Craven County and the Animal Shelter for most of Craven and Pamlico Counties stray or unwanted animals.

There are also several non-profit / volunteer rescue organizations in Craven, Pamlico, and other neighboring Counties. These groups have foster home programs for dogs, cats and sometimes other pets as well. Most can be found here on PETFINDERS or call us for additional information.

Because we see so many unwanted animals, we urge that you consider all aspects of pet ownership. Dogs and cats are an ongoing financial expense, as well as being time consuming. They need regular Veterinary checkups, they need training (Craven County Recreation Department offers several Dog obedience classes each year), they need responsible ownership, and last, but not least, they need love.

The acquisition of a pet should be a family decision; it is not a short term or temporary commitment to take an animal into your home. We strive to assist you in your choice of a dog or puppy, a cat or a kitten by asking questions regarding your lifestyle and your expectations of the pet.

By asking questions we are not being intrusive, we want to help you make the right decision, for you and for the pet. We hope that you will allow us to help you make that decision.

Our staff usually knows some of the personality traits of the animals in our care as the majority of the pets are actually surrendered by their original owners. Reasons range from moving, to children’s allergy, to just not having the time it takes to provide the companionship and care an animal requires.

We are ‘Rescue Friendly’ and will be glad to discuss our ‘rescue’ policies with a representative from your group. If you are a 501c3 group you will need to provide us with a copy of your EIN letter.
